Owners leave home, travel at least five miles, and return at a random, undecided time, in an unfamiliar vehicle, so the dog has no normal cues to go on. On camera, again and again, the dog gets up and waits at the door at the exact moment the owner decides to head home — not when they arrive, when they decide to leave. Around half of dogs tested show this. He’s about to start the same research on cats.
Sheldrake’s core idea, in its simplest form: the “laws of nature” might not be fixed, eternal rules. They might be more like habits — patterns that have been forming and reinforcing themselves since the beginning of the universe. If that’s true, everything from a crystal forming to an oak tree growing follows not a rigid law, but something closer to a deeply worn habit, shaped by everything similar that came before it.
This is the idea underneath everything else in the conversation. The standard scientific assumption is that your memories are physically stored inside your brain, like files on a hard drive — meaning when your brain dies, they’re gone forever. Sheldrake suggests something different: that memory works more like a radio tuning into a signal that already exists, rather than retrieving a file from internal storage. If he’s right, your memories don’t vanish when your brain does — they’re simply no longer being picked up.
Long before “soul” became a vague, private, modern idea, Aristotle described all living things — plants, animals, even the Earth itself — as having one. Not a soul confined to humans, but a form-shaping presence in everything alive. Sheldrake traces how that richer, older idea got steadily narrowed down over centuries until, in the modern materialist view, the soul became nothing more than electrical activity in a brain. He’s arguing for something closer to the original, bigger picture.
Sheldrake connects near-death experiences to something almost everyone has nightly: dreaming. In dreams, you have a body that moves, sees, and acts — even though your physical body is lying still. He suggests the same “dream body” may be what people experience during near-death events, and possibly what continues after death itself. He points out that many cultures used to have deliberate rites of passage built around this exact experience — and that modern life, having lost them, has left a real gap.
Sheldrake's credentials are real and substantial — Cambridge, Harvard, a Royal Society research fellowship — which makes him a genuinely unusual figure in this space. His dog telepathy research is published in peer-reviewed journals, and his experimental design (random return times, unfamiliar vehicles, video documentation) is more rigorous than typical anecdote. That said, morphic resonance itself has never been accepted by mainstream biology or physics, and Sheldrake's most famous critic — the editor of Nature, who called for his first book to be burned — represents real scientific disagreement, not just closed-minded gatekeeping. The leap from "current neuroscience may not fully explain memory" to "this supports the afterlife" is a significant one the data alone doesn't carry. Use your discernment.
